Restore Movement, Reduce Pain & Accelerate Recovery

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is an advanced manual therapy technique used by physiotherapists to identify and treat soft tissue restrictions, muscle tightness, scar tissue, and movement dysfunctions. Using specially designed stainless steel instruments, IASTM helps improve mobility, reduce pain, and promote faster healing by stimulating the body's natural repair processes.

At Mobility For Wellness, we use evidence-based IASTM techniques to help patients recover from injuries, improve flexibility, and restore optimal movement.

What is IASTM?

IASTM is a specialized soft tissue treatment that involves the use of ergonomically designed instruments to assess and treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and scar tissue. The technique is based on the principles of myofascial release and cross-friction massage.

The instruments allow physiotherapists to detect areas of tissue restriction and apply controlled pressure to break down adhesions, improve circulation, and stimulate healing. This helps restore normal tissue function and reduce discomfort caused by soft tissue dysfunction.

Conditions Treated with IASTM

IASTM may be beneficial for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Back Pain
  • Chronic Neck Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Muscle Strains
  • Sports Injuries
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Joint Stiffness
  • Golfer's Elbow
  • IT Band Syndrome

Benefits of IASTM

IASTM offers numerous benefits for individuals experiencing pain, stiffness, and mobility limitations. The treatment helps break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions, improves blood circulation, enhances flexibility, and promotes faster tissue healing. It can reduce muscle tightness, relieve pain, improve range of motion, and support recovery from sports injuries and repetitive strain conditions. By restoring normal tissue mobility and function, IASTM helps patients move more freely and perform daily activities with greater comfort.

How Does IASTM Work?

During treatment, the physiotherapist uses specially designed instruments to glide over the skin and soft tissues. These tools help identify areas of restriction, fibrosis, or scar tissue that may be limiting movement and causing pain.

Controlled pressure is then applied using specific stroke techniques to mobilize the affected tissues. This process stimulates blood flow, promotes collagen remodeling, breaks down adhesions, and encourages the body's natural healing response. As tissue quality improves, patients often experience reduced pain and increased mobility.

What to Expect During an IASTM Session

Your physiotherapist will begin with a detailed assessment to determine the source of your pain or movement restriction. The treatment area is then examined using specialized instruments to identify tissue abnormalities.

The instruments are gently applied to the affected area using precise treatment techniques. Some patients may experience mild discomfort during treatment, especially in areas with significant tissue restriction. Temporary redness or mild soreness may occur after the session and typically resolves within a few days.

A treatment session usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes and may be combined with stretching, strengthening exercises, and other physiotherapy interventions.
